RSV stands for respiratory syncytial virus. It is a common virus that affects the nose, throat, and lungs. It is very contagious. Many people think RSV infections only affect infants and children, but older adults are also at high risk for severe RSV infections.

Focus On RSV in Adults

In June 2023, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) made recommendations for the use of RSV vaccine in older adults. Pharmacists should have a conversation with patients to provide education about RSV infection and collect and assess information. If the pharmacist and patient agree that the RSV vaccine is appropriate, then the pharmacist may administer the vaccine, provide education, and document the vaccination. This practice tool will provide guidance on how to answer patient questions and recommend vaccination.
