Wiederholt Prize For Best Published Paper Award For Economic, Social And Administrative Sciences (ESAS)

2024 APhA-APRS Weiderholt Prize Recipient

Dr. Bonnie L. Svarstad

Bonnie L. Svarstad

Dr. Svarstad is Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from UW – Madison, worked as a medical sociologist in NYC, and joined the UW faculty in 1975. At Wisconsin, she served as Professor of Pharmacy and Sociology, Associate Dean, department chair, teacher of pharmacy communications, and advisor of MS and PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in Social Pharmacy. Her past awards include the APhA Foundation Achievement Award in Economic, Social, and Administrative Sciences (1988), Pinnacle Award for contributions to drug use research (2004), Fellowship in the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science (2004-), and the APhA-APRS Wiederholt Prize in 2006 and 2014.

Svarstad’s career has focused on the study of professional-patient communication and development of cost-effective ways to monitor and improve medication adherence in vulnerable populations. She and her colleagues first developed and validated the Brief Medication Questionnaire (BMQ), a now widely cited self-report tool for measuring medication adherence and barriers to adherence. Svarstad and her colleagues then obtained a 5-year NIH grant to test the cost-effectiveness of a 6-month, team-based intervention involving community pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, a modified BMQ, pharmacy-based BP counseling station, and other tools for improving adherence in a cluster-randomized study involving 28 pharmacies and 576 black patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Compared with control group, TEAM patients achieved significant and sustained improvements in refill adherence and systolic blood pressure. In their latest study for which they received the 2024 APhA-APRS Wiederholt Prize, Svarstad and her colleagues used a novel statistical method (“mediation analysis”) to identify which intervention components were the largest contributors to improved adherence and patient satisfaction in the TEAM study. Of four potential mediators, the most important was the full use of TEAM tools to reduce patient-identified barriers to adherence.

About

The APhA Best Published Paper Award for Economic, Social, and Administrative Sciences was established in 1996. In 2002, it was renamed the Wiederholt Prize in honor of Joseph B. Wiederholt, PhD (1949-2001). Dr. Wiederholt was the first recipient of the award and a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The purpose of the award is to recognize the best published paper in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA) that describes original investigation in economic, social, or administrative sciences related to pharmacy.

Criteria

The primary author must be an APhA Member. The paper need not have been presented before the Association. The paper must represent original research, and must have been published in JAPhA within 2 calendar years prior to the screening deadline (September 1 of the year before the presentation of the award). Papers will be evaluated based upon the quality of the science and translation of the research to the practice of pharmacy.

Nomination/screening process

The ESAS Section Officers of APhA-APRS will screen all ESAS-related articles published in JAPhA, and select and submit finalists to the APhA-APRS Awards Committee by the screening deadline.

Selection process

The selection is made by the APhA-APRS Awards Committee.

Nature of award

The award, presented at the APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition, consists an engraved plaque for the primary author of the selected paper, plus an engraved plaque for each of the associated authors, if any. The primary author also receives a complimentary APhA Annual Meeting & Exposition registration and reimbursement for meeting-related travel expenses, according to current travel policies and up to the maximum amount budgeted by APhA.
