It starts with one

We bide by three pillars at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Pharmacy APhA–ASP Chapter: advocate for the profession of pharmacy through policy efforts, serve patients across the state of Tennessee, and develop student pharmacists within our chapter to be the best pharmacists upon graduation. We try to base everything we do off these pillars and develop a chapter theme for the year to coincide with the APhA–ASP national theme. Our chapter’s theme for 2017–18 was “It Starts with One,” where we focused on developing individual members’ talents and on how each member could contribute to the Academy.

Rediscovering my purpose in Peru

Our APhA–ASP Chapter at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy is connected with an organization, Casa de Salud Peru, founded by a fellow pharmacist, Kerrylyn Rodriguez. Each summer, she takes a group of individuals, most but not all of whom are health professionals, to Iquitos, Peru, to provide basic health care services to the locals. The clinics provide consults with a Peruvian doctor, “pharmacy” services, reading glasses, fluoride treatment, dental care, and health screenings such as blood pressure and glucose.

When I committed to go on last summer’s trip, I figured that I was planning an experience that would push me outside my comfort zone and let me learn about another health system, but what I found was much more. I discovered a deeper connection to humanity, an immense level of gratitude for everyday life, and ultimately, this trip reignited my original inspiration to pursue a career in pharmacy.

Staying in the know has never been easier

It’s 6:30 am. The alarm goes off, signaling the start of the day. In mere moments, blue light from the phone casts upon the face of the student pharmacist. Still on his side, the student pharmacist watches as streams of information and media scroll across the phone screen. There are 8 notifications, 1 friend request, 2 messages, 10 e-mails, 2 direct messages, 12 unread texts, 136 likes, and 22 retweets.

At 8:17 am, the student pharmacist waits for the lecture to begin. E-mails? Check. Texts? Up to date. What salad dressing are you? Where is your dream vacation spot? What dog breed are you?  Wait, these three questions must be addressed! Sound familiar? Well, 10 out of 10 can relate.

APhA Institute experience will benefit my community

While at the 2018 APhA Institute on Substance Use Disorders in Salt Lake City, UT, I heard many reasons why people wanted to attend. Some expressed an interest in working within the field of substance use disorder, while others referenced personal experiences with addiction affecting family members, friends, or even themselves.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health, there are 20.8 million people with a substance use disorder living in the United States. That means substance use disorder is 1.5 times more common than all cancers combined and has a prevalence similar to diabetes. During your pharmacy career, you will be expected to counsel patients with diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, and many more; but you will be prepared for this because this knowledge is part of the PharmD curriculum. However, these patients may also be struggling with addiction, and you will need to consider complications that may arise due to an active substance use disorder or substance withdrawal.
