Pharmacy technicians’ role expands to better support pharmacists and patients

The role of the pharmacy technician has continued to evolve over the last several years. Recognizing this evolution, Florida and Tennessee recently enacted legislation that expands the role of the pharmacy technician.

Florida HB 1209 authorizes pharmacy technicians to provide immunizations under the supervision of the pharmacist. Specific requirements pharmacy technicians must adhere to prior to administering an immunization are outlined in the bill.

In Tennessee, HB 2131 was signed into law which expands pharmacy technicians role to perform tasks delegated by the pharmacist if the tasks are aligned with the pharmacy technicians education, training, and experience.
