States make advancements in the pharmacists’ scope of practice

Several states have made recent progress in expanding the pharmacist scope of practice.

  • Arizona recently enacted HB 2490, which expands and streamlines pharmacist ability to provide care under a collaborative practice agreement.
  • In Maine, HP 1327 was signed into law which allows pharmacists to provide a 30-day or smallest package dose emergency supply of medication if they are unable to obtain authorization. Importantly, the legislation sets standards for requiring coverage of these emergency filled medications.
  • New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed Assembly Bill A9007C on April 9, 2022. A9007C expands pharmacists’ authority to order and administer COVID-19 and influenza tests in the state.

Additionally, recent advancements have been made in pharmacists’ role in providing substance use disorder services. Florida passed Senate Bill (SB) 544 on April 6, 2022 which authorizes pharmacists to order and dispense an emergency opioid antagonist.
