CARES Clinic: Serving the underserved

The CARES Clinic is a student-run clinic at The Medical University of South Carolina that provides free primary care services to uninsured patients in the Charleston, SC, area. Students from the colleges of medicine, pharmacy, and health professions collaborate to produce comprehensive medical care for patients in the clinic 3 to 4 nights a week under the supervision of licensed physicians.

A safe place for housing-insecure populations

Health care is for everyone. However, there are many who go without access to preventive medicine. Housing-insecure populations are much more likely to go without primary care services due to the instability in their life that inhibits access, but despite their increased need there are few service opportunities to help connect this population to such resources.

MRM Region 7 recap: A renewed passion for policy

My Region 7 Midyear Regional Meeting (MRM) 2022 experience began on November 4, when 2 other student pharmacists and myself began the trek from Spokane to Seattle, WA. We made it there safely—after some introductions to the experience of hydroplaning through Snoqualmie Pass.

HPV vaccinations: A pharmacist’s role in addressing misinformation

During the pandemic, pharmacists were one of the leading administrators of COVID-19 vaccinations in their communities, which included addressing misinformation and educating patients on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine. However, the COVID-19 vaccine is not the only vaccine that needs advocating for. Similar to the scrutiny faced by the COVID-19 vaccine, the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has also been associated with misinformation and questioning of the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness.

The grit of public policy

On the weekend of October 28, I had the opportunity to represent the St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences as chapter delegate and chapter policy vice president at the Region 1 Midyear Regional Meeting (MRM). I presented on the importance of medical intervention focusing on polypharmacy in the older and geriatric population through state and community support. It was a humbling experience, and one which has taught me more about myself and my profession.
