Teamwork the key for APhA–ASP project success

In my first year at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Pharmacy, I chose to join the APhA–ASP Women’s Health Committee. As a new committee that was formed in 2019, there was a lot of room to cultivate this initiative into a valuable resource for our community.

My entry into the world of pharmacy was not standard. My interest started in high school, when I attended a pharmacy open house at the University of Minnesota. I had planned to go to a 0- to 6-year PharmD program but ended up attending a 4-year college in my home state. Four years later, I graduated with a triple major in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, and sociology/anthropology, and most of my pharmacy prerequisites. While I thought pharmacy was interesting and I wanted to help people, I was a bit grossed out by bodily fluids and hospitals. So, I took a detour and joined Teach For America.

JayDoc allows students to apply skills in the real world

JayDoc Free Clinic is an organization managed by University of Kansas (KU) medical students and student pharmacists that provides access to medical resources to underserved patients within the Kansas City community. Students of both professions work alongside each other—with guidance from licensed pharmacists and physicians—to triage, assess, and treat every patient with the best care possible.
